Chuck Close curates Twrkv into "Fierce Creativity"
New York, NY-The Estate of Jack Tworkov is pleased to have been selected to participate in FIERCE CREATIVITY: A Selling Exhibition for the Future of Haiti to be held at Pace Gallery, 32 East 57th Street, October 22-25. The exhibition and sale benefits Artists for Peace and Justice.
Curated by Chuck Close and Jessica Craig-Martin, Tworkov's painting Q3-78 #6, 1978, will be featured in the exhibition that will include 45 leading contemporary artists who are committed to extraordinary impact. Each piece of artwork in the collection is poised to change lives. 100% of proceeds from the exhibition benefit Artists for Peace and Justice.
Tworkov's painting is an exceptional example of the artist's late period where the artist introduced mathematical calculations into his paintings.
"There was a major change when I began to employ what you might call a more systemic approach towards the work, away from the period of so-called abstract expressionism, when so much of my work was primarily based on instinct, improvisation and spontaneity," Tworkov told curator Marcia Tucker in an interview in March 1979.
I began to think seriously about the question of what line could be drawn that is a given in a rectangle. I thought it could be the beginning of a way of dividing a canvas in a way that would be meaningful to me. [...] this method was just a guide towards divisions of a canvas that I could repeat, but they had no apparent aesthetic meaning for me. All I wanted was a given starting point for the invention of shapes. [1]
Q3-78 #6, 1978, was included in Tworkov's Memorial Exhibition held at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in July 1983. In 1985, the painting was included in important exhibition in Dallas, TX, at the Adams-Middleton Gallery titled Jack Tworkov: The Early and the Late Years. It was also included in The Late Paintings of Jack Tworkov held at ACME Fine Art, Boston in 2008. In 2012, the work was included in A Poet's Circle: and exhibition highlighting the friendship of artists with the poet Stanley Kunitz at Poets House and remained on temporary loan through the Spring 2014.
