SYNOPSIS
"P73 #1" takes the title from a painting by Jack Tworkov which inspired the angluar choreography by Julia K. Gleich. Set to a score for piano by Wisconsin based composer Joseph Koykkar, the film follows a lone dancer as they trace into and out of a geometrically composed yet gesturally painting by Tworkov. For Gleich "The painting is the dancer and the dancer, the painting." Ross Collab, a Brooklyn based photographer is the Director of Photography and edited the subtle narrative.

This film features LGBTQ+ activist / dancer Maxfield Haynes. They are an outspoken advocate for trans rights in Ballet and are actively working to create spaces for the degendering of work in the Dance field.

BIOS
Julia K. Gleich
(Choreographer) has long issued an advisory to the code and conduct deemed proper by classical ballet—a form ruled historically by a patriarchy. Her work takes on what cultural anthropologist Victor Turner calls the liminoid state “a messy, non-binary state” which is “this or that or that” and not merely “this or not this.” Institutions prefer the liminal, new art lives in the liminoid. And this has been the tension in Gleich’s creative life - how to embrace the dance world without (its his-stories) succumbing to a governing institutional identity. She also connects with her field through producing programs of dance, researching her own vector movement theory, and writing about philosophical concerns around canon.
