Chicago, IL - Valerie Carberry Gallery is pleased to announce Drawing the Figure, an exhibition of drawings by Jack Tworkov that spans four decades. The exhibition opens November 14, 2014 and will be on view through January 10, 2015.

Predominantly known as an abstract painter and for his formative role in the New York School, Tworkov maintained a special regard for figure drawing throughout his career and kept a rigorous practice of it. His commitment to close, attentive looking while drawing from life resulted in an energetic and diverse style. Tworkov’s figures range from minimal, loose and calligraphic to busy, fragmented and abstracted interpretations of the human form. This show is the first occasion that Tworkov’s figures have been the subject of an exhibition.

In the brochure for the exhibition, Jason Andrew writes:

In Tworkov’s drawings there is conflict—a push and pull—whether it is his more familiar gestural abstract charcoal drawings from the 1950s or the mathematically generated geometric works of the artist’s later career. Though it is the artist’s figure drawings, like the selection prepared for this exhibition, where we truly celebrate Tworkov’s unique, intimate, and nuanced hand and where the artist’s conflict between the real and the imagined, the abstract and the representational appears to resolve with some terrific intent.

Drawing the Figure will be accompanied by an illustrated brochure featuring an essay by Jason Andrew, Archivist and Curator of the Estate of Jack Tworkov, as well as an excerpt from an interview with Jack Tworkov during his visit to Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1960.
